He wouldn't let go.
"We did it, Mom," Chalmers said between sobs. "A dream come true," Almarie said later, her own eyes glistening. "A prayer answered. We've been waiting on this moment since he was 2."
This moment -- this Shining Moment -- was almost preordained four years earlier, when Mario went to the Final Four in this same building with his dad, current Kansas director of basketball operations Ronnie Chalmers. They watched Connecticut beat Georgia Tech for the title, and Ronnie remembers one spectacular play from that game when he jumped to his feet but Mario remained in his chair. "What's wrong?" Ronnie asked his son. "I'm thinking," Mario said.
"What are you thinking about?" "One day," Mario said, "I'm going to be out there winning the national championship." That goal guided the Chalmers family from Alaska to Kansas three years ago. It guided them to this game and ultimately to this moment -- this Shining Moment -- that rescued Kansas from near-certain defeat and gave the 2008 NCAA tournament its signature.
Chalmers' shot capped the Jayhawks' steely nine-point comeback in the final 2:12 of regulation on their way to a 75-68 overtime triumph. It was the blow that broke an excellent Tigers squad -- a Tigers squad that turned the school's first championship into a stunning championship choke. "You have a lead like that," coach John Calipari said, "you're supposed to win the game."
The emotional whiplash that followed Chalmers' 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining will be felt for years on both campuses. Memphis will always love a team that finished 38-2 -- but always wince at the way it unraveled at the very end. And giddy Kansas now has another name to add to its list of all-time heroes: Clyde Lovellette, Wilt Chamberlain, Danny Manning …
Mario Chalmers.

I thought it was going in when it left my hands.
--Mario ChalmersOn the 20th anniversary of Danny and the Miracles' winning Kansas' last championship, give a Rock Chalk salute to Miracle Mario.
"It will probably be the biggest shot in Kansas history," coach Bill Self said.
The kid scored 18 on the night, earning Most Outstanding Player honors. But the replay that will live forever in Lawrence will focus on a single shot. For years to come, kids all over Kansas will go into the driveway or the backyard or the gym and pretend to be Mario Chalmers swishing that jumper. With 10.8 seconds left, Self diagrammed the play. It called for the potential tying shot to be in Chalmers' calm hands -- a pass from penetrating Sherron Collins for a 3.
Of course Chalmers was the choice: He has home-state ice water in his veins. He's been good in the clutch his entire career. "In YMCA and AAU and high school, he was always the go-to guy," Ronnie Chalmers said. For the go-to guy's shot to matter, though, Kansas needed at least one more in a nightmarish series of missed free throws from Memphis.
Awful foul shooting was the endlessly discussed weakness of these Tigers, but they had made it a moot point in three straight rampaging NCAA tournament victories over Michigan State, Texas and UCLA. Now, with the title right there for the taking, star junior Chris Douglas-Roberts missed three straight, leaving the door open for Kansas.
Then, with 10.8 seconds on the clock, sensational freshman Derrick Rose stood on the line with Memphis up two, trying to ice it. His first shot hit the rim and fell off. He made the second, but the one miss gave Kansas its opportunity to tie.
Collins dribbled upcourt and veered to his right -- almost losing the ball as Memphis players hacked at him, trying to foul and prevent a 3 from being hoisted. Collins' strength probably prevented a whistle, though, and he shoved a pass to Chalmers as he came curling off the wing.
The ball came up into Chalmers' chest. He took one rushed dribble to his left and elevated. Rose jumped with him, arm outstretched. Chalmers arched the shot over Rose's fingers and into the tension-drenched Texas air. "I thought it was going in when it left my hands," Chalmers said.
Teammate Brandon Rush, who was directly underneath the basket, concurred.
[+] Enlarge

AP Photo/Matt York
Kansas' first title in 20 years was as dramatic as it gets.
"I could see it splash right in there," Rush said. "Pretty cool."
Blessed with a good sight line in the stands behind the play, Almarie Chalmers knew, too.
"I saw it going straight in," she said. "When it hit the bottom of the net, I breathed."
Everyone else screamed. Kansas fans in ecstasy. Memphis fans in agony.
The Tigers had nothing left in overtime. No momentum. No Joey Dorsey, who had fouled out. No legs for tired Douglas-Roberts and cramping Rose. Kansas scored the first six in OT to take command of a game it had come amazingly close to losing.

Earlier in the second half, as the game began slipping away from the Jayhawks, Self was telling his players, "You've got to believe." But the situation was dire enough that when Memphis' Robert Dozier went to the foul line with 2:12 left and the Tigers up seven,

Ronnie Chalmers reached into his pocket for some divine guidance. On a piece of paper, he'd written two verses from Psalms: 46:10 and 46:1. He pulled them out and read them to himself.
"Be still, and know that I am God," reads 46:10.
"God is a refuge and strength. A very present help in trouble," reads 46:1.
"We were in trouble at that time," Ronnie said.

Ya think? The trouble deepened when Dozier swished both free throws. The lead was 60-51 as the clocked slipped inside two minutes. This was desperate.
But Chalmers and Collins -- two guards who had taken some very bad shots as Memphis asserted itself -- rode to the rescue. Chalmers passed to Darrell Arthur for a jump shot that made it 60-53. Then, after a timeout, Collins made the two plays that really made it a ballgame -- he stole the ball from Antonio Anderson and, after a couple of quick passes, got it back in the corner for a 3-pointer. Until then, Kansas was 1-for-9 from 3-point range. Collins swished it.
After a pair of Douglas-Roberts free throws, Chalmers made a pair of his own. That set the stage for Memphis' foul-line debacle, which was augmented by a bad decision to attack the basket with 20 seconds left instead of pulling the ball out and killing clock while clinging to a two-point lead.
But all the Memphis foibles down the stretch could have been survived if Chalmers hadn't hit the shot of a lifetime. "First, I'm happy for Mario," Ronnie Chalmers said. "Then I'm happy for Coach Self -- he was long overdue for this. Then I'm happy for the team.
"It's great for a parent to see their son's dream come true. … You've got to think about it every day the rest of your life. This is the moment." One Shining Moment.
Pat Forde is a senior writer for ESPN.com. He has been through six of the seven, three to four day chemo rounds, had a stem cell harvest, and had invasive surgery to remove the tumor. In addition to this the doctors would like him to have a bone marrow transplant and eventually have radiation treatments, additional treatments, and then possibly antibody therapy. He is currently showing no evidence of disease. I had never had to deal with any healing issues, but this stirred within me a desire to release these thoughts and feelings that I have surrounding Caden’s health issues. I feel like working through these ideas in my art has been very helpful to try and focus on the positive things rather on the negative. I don’t want to downplaying the pain or gloss over heartache, but rather show it in the burning cleansing trial by fire which brings impurities to the surface, so that they can be removed, the poison and pain of medical treatments, all of which is overcome with seared wings of faith, sincere hope, truth, beauty and above all love. I feel called as an artist to address ideas and truths through my artwork that calls from deep within me to deep within the viewer.

Since it is near Christmas time, and we have had multiple requests for Caden's Hope Necklace information again, I am reposting this previous post.

We did have an article written up in the Lawrence Journal World about Ann selling these at the recent Lawrence Art Center Holiday Art Fair.
____________________________________________________________
Below is the original post:

Our friend Ann who produces a beautiful jewelery line, is offering a necklace especially for our son Caden as a way of helping out with his medical costs. Besides starting an artist group with my wife called BALM we have been very busy. My son Caden was diagnosed with Nueroblastoma cancer June 28th, 2007. Click the image below to see a post on one of my other blogs with a sculpture that I am working on about his condition and situation.

I wanted to post a piece that I am working on. I have been very interested in carving wood lately. I don't know why exactly, but it seems like I am getting back to my roots. The first time I remember working 3-D was always in wood. My dad gave me a pocket knife when I was 8 and after I learned by getting three stitches, I carved him two swords crossing and attached them to a tree truck slab. I also carved a horse, but he did the majority of the work on this one.

Anyway, below is a cedar piece I am working on and set aside for a while to figure out what to do with it. I will post later a wood form that I am working on for a commissioned piece.
You can see my main site at http://darinwhite.com/.
a little red paint goes a long way...

so shanshan has inspiration hit. she goes down to her studio to work on a new painting. at 1:30am in the morning i convince her we should go to bed since we have meeting at 9am. we start getting ready to shut our eyes and she screams! she had stepped on a red tube of paint and it was all over her shoes. she walked into the house, up the stairs and was putting things away for 10 minutes before realizing how many places you can make footprints in 10 minutes. aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! so after awhile of finding red paint wherever we look, we decide we will have to deal with it tomorrow. in the morning we continue to find red all over including clothes, chairs, more clothes, stairs. pretty much anything that rhymes had red paint in the general area.

so we decide we need to get out of the house from our red frustrating day/night. we decide to go to a reception showing nick vacarro's work. we enter the eatery to find more blue hair than picasso's blue period. i think the median age was around 75. now don't get me wrong, i have no problem and in fact enjoy any age group, but we are sticking out like a sore thumb. after signing in we are greeted by far the two youngest in the group who is around 50-60. we introduce ourselves. they say, how did you know the pucketts? oh...um...well...we were invited to see the nick vicarro paintings. oh, i don't know nick. i would like to meet him. shanshan says. um...well maybe so. she didn't happen to mention he passed away in the last few years. so we are ushered over to meet mr. and mrs. puckett. they seem to be having their 60th wedding anniversary in conjunction to the viewing of nick vicarro's paintings. they smiled and were very kind, and we quickly went to the punch bowl with the kids. we sat at a table with 4 others. they were very kind. one of the hosts comes over to figure out how we know the pucketts as they can't quite remember how they know us, but with everything going on and so forth. we...um...know nick and he...um...well they...invited us tonight. so we continue to exchange social niceties with our very kind table partners. we get involved in some random party pics. we smiley nicely and pose. i mentioned how the punch was very delicious and enjoyed the fact that you could eat the fruit after drinking the liquid. i think there was a nice murmur, or maybe i thought i heard something like this. shanshan says quietly to me something about this was a famous artist who knew nick? i said that we might not want to figure out why we are here, as the reason might be called crashing a party. our kids start to have behavior problems and shanshan, takes them over to get some cheese. the wife of the 60th anniversary, asks her again how she knows us, as she is blocking the grub. shanshan decides that she might come clean and say that she is not sure, how we are connected in any way shape or form. anyway...the kids are acting up too much and i might be running out of conversation ideas with our table buddies. shanshan takes a look at the paintings while dragging the kids by the arms and makes a bolt for the door. i decide i better follow, and as politely as possible excuse myself. i think i was asked about 10 times how i knew the pucketts. so out the door we go. on to the next party, a bar mitzvah down the street...with red paint on our shoes.

an interesting day in the life of a run-on-sentence-rambling-mispeller-

some days are just not normal. i have been on vacation since Christmas, so this is already different, but this was one of those odd days.

i went to kc today to help big john wu negotiate a car deal with a dealership all the way in lee summit, mo. this deal was for a friend of his friends, or brother or something, wang and wang bu. wu did the research and i looked at the details, and figured we should stick with this certain car, so we go up to the dealership...wu, wang, wang bu and moi. i am the contact/negotiator/test driver/initial quasi interpreter, wu is the chinese interpreter/driver/test driver, wang is the tip requestor/buyer/head of the house, wang bu is the neck that turns the head and the holder of the checks/nodder. it was a great circus in which there was much time translating, drinking coffee and waiting for the negotiator who could have just yelled over the partitian wall what he wanted, but instead paged the person 20 feet away. it was tiring, long, scary (when wang was driving) but enjoyable to see wang and wang bu get a great car at a great price. after leaving the lot in a train of cars, we stopped by steak and shake for some blood sugar relief. while waiting for our not-so-fast food, i looked over to see mr. ray adams from the infamous late-night-movie-car-lot-used-car-dealer-sponsor-ads. i couldn't resist the urge to go over and introduce myself as he was chewing on his sandwich. he gave me a left-hand-right-hand shake, (which i figure is better than his bodygaurd kicking me) and i told him, i appreciated the late night movie thing, and his business savy.

i got home and was buried with work, and then went on a date....with my wife of course! we got cheap sushi and then went to borders to finish out a grandma wentz giftcard from a few years ago, look at art, and talk. i saw some nice sculpture work in a new mag or two, as shannon looked at her books. i ran into a sub base buddies ( www.kieljohnson.com ) work in a book called "new paintings" or something to this effect. i have been wondering where all the sub-base people of my era were up to just a few weeks ago. his site was a blast and reminded me of old times. i was up too early and now up too late.

<img width='1' height='1'

This is how I refer to this project now.

I am way over my head electrically, mathmatically, financially, and

any other ally that you can imagine.

It is amazingly fun at the same time. If you pray, pray that I don't blow myself up. Yesterday I finished attaching the Gas Valve (from a natural gas furnace) and blower assembly together. I started to rig the electrical together and blew the mini transformer! Arrrgh.

I hope to finish the electrical with help tomorrow, and then on to the gas line connection. Don't worry, I do have a safety shut off valve set up.

This is how it should work.

There is a gas grill starter that will lighting the pilot light after the blower is turned on low, and then the gas. If the pilot light goes out it will automatically shut the gas off in the valve, so that the furnace will not fill with gass fumes (which could create a bad bomb like effect). We don't want this! So once I finish the safety/ electrical connection, I will attach the gas and do a safety test. Hopefully this weekend. I hope this weekend to pour the castable refractory. This should take a few days to dry, and then on to the real fun of casting!!!!

I am in the middle of building the tongs to remove the crucible from the furnace, which I forgot to take a picture of. I am working on purchasing a high temperature thermocouple and reader so that I can read the temperature of the melted metal. I should have a gauge that will read up to 2300F degrees!

Shown below from left to right is the pilot light and thermocouple on the bottom and the blower/burner output pipe on top, the T section is the connection for the gas which plugs into the gas valve. The output pipe inserts into the blower (a vacuum motor) which has a control valve that allows more or less air depending on the pressure and mix of gas to air ratio required for the perfect output flame.

Below is a detail of all the wiring that is still in a jumble.

You can see the starter (the red button) and the transformer to power the 110 volts down to low voltage to run the gas valve.

Changed Design for Burner/Blower and Propane Fueled Casting Furnace

I am wondering about my choice of projects. This furnace project is producing math equations that I haven't had to work, in.....ever. I never took calc. (thank goodness). I am not a huge math fan. A very odd sort of fellow told me that math is the highest art form. hmmm.

Anyway, I had to have instruction on how to formulate the square inch volume of the furnace, and divide this by 1728 to get the cubit foot volume and then subtract the overall size minus the interior volume and multiply this by the weight of the castible refractory (140lbs), and then repeat for the lid! Add the two together and then go buy that amount of refractory, plus a little more in case my math was off. WHEW! I haven't even gone into figuring out the details on the blower/burner, or the pyrometer/thermocouple that I am building. I like welding better. Below are my concept sketches.

Burner Design? Let me explain.

So, as I mentioned before, I am producing a small foundry. I have started the blower furnace image and furnace image alt but have yet to connect any juice. I had a random day the other day. I was at my companies DisplayDirect.com or www.displaydirect.blogspot.com or www.myspace.com/displaydirect warehouse and on my way back (this is the short version) ran into a tow truck driver who have a nasty looking 55 gallon drum, who said go to this and that their station and ask for Jimmy John or such, and they gave me the 30 gallon drum (very nice gas station people too) and sent me over to Billy Bob over off of this and that street where I bought (for $3) the 55 gallon drum. In the meantime I run into a friend of mine from Jr. High, and he has something like 15 Moog type 1970's organs. So, I was in a big hurry when I got home and dropped off the drums below as shown. I find out later that I had mistakenly turned the 55 gallon drum upside down! Ahhhhhh! Oil slick. I am still working on this mess. About two weeks later after cleaning as much oil out of the drum as I can, decide to put our campfire from the campout that Sister and Mr. C and I had in the backyard. I looked like a vagabond with the white smoke that rolled out of this thing! (Don't try this at home). I was very safe though. I even had a fire extinguisher (as water will not help and oil fire).

Ebay, Fishing, Dolls and NASCAR

I went to the Kansas Speedway two times last year to help with a fundraiser for our church. While I was there working (cush job) the crazy expensive suites, one of the bar tenders asked if I would go and by him a "Danica" t-shirt, because she was "huuuot!" (I tried to show the accent he used). Anyway, I went and bought the shirt for him. On the way back, I stopped by Ford Racing and picked up this license plate and then sold it on Ebay.

I love Ebay! So far I have sold over 5,000 pegboard hooks, turkey feathers, deer hair, glass shelves, and I don't know what else. Oh yea, I sold some dolls (HA!) for Heckbar! Oh, now that was funny. He brought these old dolls over. I threw on some music and we started taking pics for Ebay. The music was like boom-chicka, boom-chicka-boom! And here we are he is undressing these dolls, and I am doing a photo shoot! It was hillarious! I wish I could roll the music over this site, because, ah you just had to be there. That reminds me about another time when I saw Heckbar running around in tights, but maybe that is for another time! :)

Well I did go fishing with Heckbar not too long ago at C's Beautiful Lake. We had a great time. We were fly fishing in between spinning casting. He threw a bass bug over a sunken log and called up a "bohemuth from the deep" as he said it. About a minute later, I heard a huge splash and looked around to see the tail of this monster fish heading back down. He swears the thing was 5 or 6 pounds. ;) sure it was. But it was a big fish. He just pulled the bug out of his mouth in anticipation! Oh well, we only cried a little while. Then we went over to his honey hole and caught crappie like we were at a state fair playing the fishing game and stealing all there stuffed animals! I had a really busy day at work, with people from Fortune 500+ companies from France and locally expecting everything, and had an order as I had my hand on the doorknob to travel the long distance upstairs for my commute home. Shanart received a interesting phone call saying there were some people on their way over to have her produce a character sketch for them. In the meantime I found Goonies on TV and had fun watching the last part of the show (I love the part when they find the loot in the pirate ship). These people call and state that they can't find our house, so I go outside with the phone and give them directions to our door. Here comes a group of college age guys piling out of the car. They introduce themselves with names I couldn't pronounce and follow me inside. I stuck around while Shanart was meeting with them, as I wasn't comfortable with that situation (Shanart wasn't either). Anyway, the guys are from Turkey and Greece and they want this character sketch done for a friends birthday with a total of 5 characters and a bubble so they can write inside jokes to this birthday boy.

So let the bargaining begin.....

Shannon tells them her thoughts and what would make it look nicer than your normal character sketch (she usually does old master portrait sketches-very nice check www.shannonwhite.com ) and her pricing based on sizing etc. They looked surprised and said that it was more than they had for their budget. We haggled back and forth changing size and price for a while and then the real fun began. One of the Turkish guy's said, "I will give you some Turkey bedsheets" to cover the difference of what you want and what we can afford, especially if you make me look handsome!" I about trying not to laugh. We talked a little more and decided that between the two offers he made (the other was for Turkish wine) we decided to approve this barter and she is scheduled to start on it today! Ha! Turkish sheets!
As I am in the middle of sitting down to eat a late supper (because of our guests) the phone rings. It is my friend (our friendship international student) who just arrived back from break from Tiawan. His buddy and he had a miscommunication and he and his girlfriend are stuck at the airport. I took Sister & we went and picked up BigJ and Yki, so we didn't get back till after 10. It was great to meet Yki for the first time, she seems very sweet. In fact Sister and she had a great time on the way back even though they couldn't really communicate. Sister giggled for almost the whole ride.

When I got home, Shanart and I watched a little bit of Iron Chef (which we love and I ate some sushi during it), and then after that we watched a rerun we never saw of this fashion design show which I wouldn't think I would be in least interested in, but it is very creative. It bugs me that the majority of the guys on this show are so openly gay. It frustrates me because it kind of insinuates that you have to be gay to be creative if you are a male. This is another blog, I can feel it. The guy below is sure eccentric!

Adventures in Deer Hunting

(More accurately, Sitting in the woods, freezing my butt off)

I love to hunt! What an awesome experience! What isn't there to like about hunting? There are gadgets and accessories (I love everything to do with this), there are special clothes, scent control, camo tents, stands, blinds, decoys, RIFLES (a stick that goes bang, what's not to love), cold weather, beautiful scenery, excitement, adventure, mystery, being outwitted by a deer (or multiple), TRUCKS, friends, food, etc...

I guess the early morning part kind of stinks, but you do get to see the sunrise. And sitting in the woods 15 feet in the air with more clothes than should fit on you to the point where you look like the stay-puff marshmallow man, and it feels like you are as naked as a jaybird. I guess the part about sitting in the woods (which is what I usually do) and not the actual hunting part is a bummer as well. The part where you walk in for 15-25 minutes and you get so hot you sweat, and then when you sit down for a while you start to freeze isn't my favorite. Also, I don't like when the inside of your nose freezes, or your breath turns to icicles on your balaclava. Sometimes your toes freeze, or your nose...Actually it reminds me of the song.... Head shoulders, knees and toes, knees and TOES!

I wonder sometimes if you actually want to get a deer, because that is when the real work begins. You have to put your perfectly clean (and scent free!) arm deep in the belly of a big mammal that is so warm, all the red stuff (edited for soft in heart) flowing out and steaming as it hits the air, the intestines and other innards, warming you to your core, until you pull your wet hand out into the frigid air and you want to scream! I guess that part is not the best, nor is the part of dragging it out of the woods, hosting it into the truck, hanging it, skinning it, or butcher it (actually that part is pretty cool, but time consuming). BUT....I LOVE to pull a hot 3" thick backstrap off the grill and into the trap and chomp down. YES!!!! The amazing flavor of a steak that you did everything for, but help it grow. Now how cool is that. Instead of being a scavenger you are a true carnivor!!!! A hunter! Now what is not to LOVE!

Cousin Smiley and d on a cold deerless hunt

Part 2 How the hunt went today

Well, it is deer season now. Correct that, it is one of three rifle deer seasons. It is a precious commodity the time to hunt deer. You have 12 days to blast a big one, at the time of year when the rut (the make baby deer time) is over and they have already been shot at for around 2 months by people with arrows and quite a few have gone to the happy hunting grounds (or whatever deer call it). The deer are skittish to say the least. If they haven't yet, a lot will go to nocturnal venturing for food etc after the first boom stick goes bang. Well, today is the second day of the season. Yesterday I sat on the stand and froze. Shooting was all around me, and I ..... sat there freezing. Today however was different! I sat in a hunting tent blind in a soybean field with a good friend (you know he is a good friend if he gets up at 4 : "O" something to go become a popsicle with you on his land, when he is just there to watch and be a pack mule <well>) and watched out over two different tree lines in which a deer could pop his head out at any minute. Well on 6 hours of sleep and 4 and a half the night before, my eyes were sagging like Jane Fonda's work out weights. I was doing blink, blink, b l i n k, b l I n k, close........ blink, blink. They were watering profusely and I have major windburn. All the while my friend Stay Puff pencil neck, is over there sleeping in my oh so comfy chair, but not good to sit in to deer hunt in chair, sawing logs and dreaming of barking spiders. Oh to not be enthralled in looking for deer. Sleep for my eyes!

About 8:30am with our teeth chattering, we say I wonder where the deer are, it's only 10 below (with windchill it was really probably about 10 degrees). I wonder if there are deep in the cedars waiting for the sun to shine. Well actually the sun was shining, but as Stay Puff put it...I wonder if we should let God know he forgot to turn the heat on in the sun? I wonder if that is why I don't get a deer when I am hunting with Stay Puff. He tends to make me laugh out load, which is not a good thing unless you want to let the deer know your there. Anyway...We got up out of the tent and decided it was time to MAKE something happen. We started South upwind, since it was a COLD, COLD North wind and if you still hunt (yes I know this sounds weird as you are actually moving, but that is what they call stalk hunting) with the wind at your back, you will never see a deer because the wind carriers your scent and your sounds to the animals. We went down the creekbed as it would be the most quiet. Well, we weren't so quite, as you step on leaves and branches and get stuck by the occasional thorn bush. Stay Puff was in front of me, knowing his land better, and we had gone around 75 to 100 yards when we say a LARGE deer and his VERY LARGE brother streak through the woods like Absolom, except they don't get their hair caught in trees. I saw a glimpse of the rack on the back deer and there waving flag like white tails and tried very hard not to cry like a baby, as they were moving through the thick woods so quickly that I couldn't have got my gun up in time, so I didn't bother. Ok, now I am warm! The blood is pumping, and the circulation is back. We devise a plan. We will trick the deer! What a novel concept! I wish I had thought of that before. I would circle back and get north of the poverty, between to logical places for the deer to exit the woods these two finger streams with trees on either side. I am set up between the streams straining to see the deer as a white flash catches my eye on the west stream. A deer! A fast deer! Go deer go! Goodbye deer! I wonder if that is all I can think about as he runs by in the thickest part of the trees. No possible shot, not even a thought (well maybe a thought). Stay Puff comes out of the woods looking perturbed. I told him that I saw one shoot by. He said why didn't you "Shoot" it? We track into the creek and the thick woods behind the deer, checked a couple of open fields and then tried to "push" the deer north and out of the fingers.

We went about 200 yards and we saw more white flags! Deer, deer on! We came out of woods between two other fingers, and heading slowly northward. Again, more visible white tails and even some body, the deers pressed forward again. Again, further up we saw them again, for now it was both deer again. I ran forward (being very careful with my safety on and gun quartered away from me) with the intension of getting ahead of the deer as the woods were winding NW and then back NE. I made it about 100 yards and was huffing as Stay Puff says, there he is! A noble beast with a neck (as Stay Puff put it) like a football player and a rack like a chandelier trotted out into the field, I was pulling my gun up just as he walked behind a hill. I could see his massive antler's and the top 1/3 of this head, so I said to myself. "Self, shoot the stinking deer in the head, at least you will have a deer and you can always do a European mount, and you won't ruin any meat!" So self raised the gun, looked through the scope and .....

realized that running in heavy clothing in not the best shape and then trying to look through a scope is harder than you would realize. As my chest was heaving up and down the deer looked like a bobble head doll. Ok, now focus. This IS the biggest deer you have the pleasure to shoot, display and eat, so concentrate. Oh, I know, I will lay prone and shoot it from a resting position. Ok, top of the head is now barely visible. Up, down, up, down goes the scope (is that a song). Deer decides to lope away out of view. I jump up with the thought of another cutoff. I run another 100 yards to see the deer at 300-400 yards away. I know I am slower now, but that deer was moving! I flatten myself on the ground. Last chance ditch effort, prone shot, now or never. Scope is UP, DOWN, UP, DOWN, UP DOWN much faster with no control. Deer looks back at 400-500 yards as if to say, HA, HA! and runs up the gorgeous copper flecked chest high grass blowing in the wind and out of site.

Stay puff is wondering, "why didn't you shoot it!" "Well...puff, puff, puff....I, puff, puff, puff couldn't get a shot!, puff, puff, puff!" I am now hot in the -10 weather and completely sweating in my new 4 in 1 coat.

I would guess that I won't live this one down ever, just like last year when at 25 yards a nice 6 point suddenly appeared out of no where and I was so surprised that I yelled something and spooked it, it ran the opposite way and out of my life.

Deer....you can't live with them, and apparently I can't shoot them.

Se la vi

The Waffleflingin Incident and other Interesting Scenarios

When Shanart and I were in Belgium in 1996. We went with an art history class and actually got 3 credits. We had a class once a week that would deal with the culture, the art and how to act as an American on European soil. We tasted Nutella on bread, we talked about wearing dark colors and not being too loud, and not "acting" too American. We were trained and read for the "European Experience".

We arrived in Brussels, Belgium and took to train to just on the outskirts of The Grand Plas (The Grand Place) and our hotel in the upstairs of a cafe/bistro. We dropped our gear and immediately met back downstairs to start the trip off right by a quick view of The Grand Plas. Shanart, and most of the rest of us had traveled in "American" clothes figuring that she would change when she arrived. We loved the walk of the area and on our return an hour or so later we just down the street from our place of stay, when Shanart was approached by a man who asked if she was an American. She replied that she was, and he proceeded to ask her if she wanted a Belgian Waffle. She promptly refused, and I just as quickly accepted (I have never been shy to accept food). He brought me over to a card table set up on the edge of the street, and the rest of the group followed as curious as I was.

There was a lady behind the card table, who asked if I wanted cream (whipcream) with my waffle, and I wasn't so sure that I didn't. So as she was putting the whipcream, we were smiling and talking about our good luck of free food, and as in a slow motion video I saw out of my peripheral view that she was throwing something at me. I instinctively ducked, but not low enough, as the waffle (for that is what it was) and exorbitant amount of cream bounced off of my shoulder and onto the black cashmere coat of the sensitive girl with our group who was presently enjoying the sites from behind me. In the confusion, while Dana is crying and others are offering her their condolences about her black cashmere coat, I am trying to figure out where my free food fun went wrong. The lady and as we see now, two men who are laughing hysterically and pointing, as a schoolchild would taunt another on the playground. We realize that one of the men has a video camera, not the kind that you use personally on a vacation, but a full fledge professionally camera, the kind that TV is shot from. When pressed by the only lady who spoke fluent French about what was happening, we were able to get a rough idea that we were on the rude equivalent of "Candid Camera", or more to date "Punked", but stepped up a notch and for lack of an actual name it was something to the effect of "Watch the Dumb Americans!" I did however get some justice out of this situation, as I demanded to have a waffle. It was quite stale, but never-the-less tasty. My first Belgian waffle!

I was so thankful to be going back to the hotel, Shanart and I fell into the tiniest double bed that is even humanly possible. As we both relaxed, we were aware that we were completely wedged together. The bedsprings were so weak in the center of the bed that we went where gravity took us...to the middle of the bed. As we worked ourselves free of the knot that this created, we devised a plan to allow us to make it through the rest of the trip. We laughed. I think this was a good plan as later in our trip we stayed in the Red Light District in Zurich, Switzerland. But that is another story.

Reply Blogging....

I have found that in replying to other blogs, that some really good discussions can come up. This is a reply to that of a blog by A Forrest read his whole blog here under
Monday, November 14, 2005 Random thoughts and activities from the weekend: http://www.aforrest.blogspot.com/
I added a few comments after the fact and some more stories.....

First on the Harry Potter thing, I haven't read it, or gone anywhere near it as it seems very weird to read a book about the Occult. That being said, and now I know that I shall be harassed as the Christian who doesn't know what he is talking about, I do understand how easy it is to make blanket statements about books or anything else for that matter.

I understand that the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe sounds like a Satanistic book, but having read it a million times and grown up with it, I know that it is actually C.S. Lewis's way of showing Biblical themes in a fictional way. The theme isn't about some wizard kid. Please, enlighten me in how a wizard kid has an underlying theme of Biblical values and it is not just a fun way to get people involved in the Occult. It seems to me kind of like how the media and Hollywood are gradually opening up conversations, or shows, or comments about being gay is a normal lifestyle and how if we don't accept it as such, then we are a bigot. I say love the people, but you should still hate the sin. Just like we should hate any sin, even ones that don't seem as "bad" to us. All sin is death. Wow, did I really just write all that. I guess it is good to be open and honest. I will wait for the wrath. :)

Ok, now that is out of the way, Forrest, get yourself a DVD. I still have a VCR as well, because I haven't changed over all of my tapes to DVD's. I have too many hunting tapes, and kids tapes to get rid of it. A DVD player is cheap and it has so many more extras. Besides, you don't have to rewind. Recently we went on a family vacation to good 'ol Branson. We took our lap top with the DVD drive in it and put it in the center of the seat between shanart and I and the kids did so much better driving. We only let them watch one movie, but they were so good for an hour and a half. Only 3 hours of whining! WOW! On the way back brother still complained about which movie we were watching, so only 3 and a half hours of whining. We had a great time in Branson. The kids loved Silver Dollar City (S and I did too).

I got away for a morning and froze my butt off in the river, just off of the trout hatchery. I will have to blog about that on my site, but it was fun. I didn't catch anything, but it was cool seeing these trout swarm around my feet and jumping upstream. It is amazing how I loose track of what we were talking about. Shanart would say it is because I have a one track mind.

Back to the fishing. I loved getting to the river early in the morning, not the getting up part, but the part where the mist is coming of the river and the fish are jumping a foot or even two out of the water with their rainbow side gleaming in the predawn light. A beautiful thing is when the dorsal fin is just below the surface of the water and it streaks across the water so quickly. All you can see is a drawing of a line in the water in the shape of the way the fish darted. It is some of the most beautiful artwork I have ever seen. Not only this, but a group of men are gathered around the mouth of the output where the stream flows into the river. All huddled around and casting short roll casts with their bright glowing indicators showing the path of the river. It will disappear out of sight as they receive a strike, and more often than not, they set the hook to late and end up just jerking the line out of the water in a spastic action. The beautiful action of the fly casting and syncopated rhythm is amazing. All done as a single fisherman...this group casts together, allowing the line to follow the path of the river and then when to the end, a quick backcast and up to the mouth of the river again, all together now. I find out later, talking to an older (and wiser) fisherman about the reason I only got a couple of strikes. I didn't have this freshwater shrimp imitation called a scud. He graciously gave me a few he had tied himself. I offered a few of my own, which he responded that he had thousands of fly's and not to worry about it. Unfortunately I was not able to try these fly's as I was late to get going with the rest of the family, so we could swim in the pool at the "Boxcar Willy" hotel.

Such a Branson name. It was a beautiful trip. I enjoyed watching the kids enjoying their time and also watching my wife enjoy the kids. What a beautiful thing a family is. This reminds me about how Sister's(NEW) preschool read a book to the kids that said, this is a family with a daddy and a mommy and kids, and some family's have a daddy and a step mommy and kids, and others are two daddy's or two mommy's and kids. I about screamed. Talk about trying to indoctrinate our kids early on that having two mommy's as your only parents is a normal thing. I try and wonder where they misunderstand that in nature it can't work that way, or there would be no offspring. Do we wonder why? I could get started on other things like this, like Evolution, and the amazing crock that is, but maybe another time. I think I have riled enough people for today. Truth be told...and not hidden in fear. d

Run with Ryun Don't Parachute off of Houses

Skinny D and Congressman Ryun @ Run for Revolutions

Police Biker and Run for Revolutions participates

WoodyD & Congressman Ryun

There was a run last week at The Seed as a benefit for Revolutions http://www.revolutionslife.com . Mr. B and I decided to go support this very worthy cause. Not only is it a great program, but it is also a friends brainchild, Skinny D. B did all or at least most of the graphics, including logo, website, animated logo etc. Very cool. Anyway, B and I decided that we didn't have stamina or time to do the 3.1 miles, so we went and I got my #106 and he got his #107 Race Number and all these goodies. I took pics of the prayer that Congressman Jim Ryun opened the race with, with WoodyD, friends and family in the crowd, the beginning of the race and then promptly entered the building to have some coffee and bagels (ok a few donuts too). Then we got out of there.

Did you know that Congressman Ryun, besides being the first 4 minute miler in High School went to the Seed quite a while ago?

I grew up with his twin's N and D. I loved hanging out with them. We were good friends into high school. Shanart and I went to DCCS (now Veritas) with all of their children.
Their oldest daughter HRT married a friend of mine. His name is DT. We called him Mad Dog because he was absolutely insanely fearless.

I remember one day we were at Lake Dabby and he saw a very large (I mean large) hornets nest up on the edge of the second story of the cabin. He thought it might be fun to get our large wooden john boat oar that was around 10 feet long and knock the nest down. He wanted to obliterate these things. Actually, I think he just enjoyed the challenge of swinging at these tiny flying insects madder than......well....er....a hornet(s). As far as I know he didn't get stung, but I didn't stick around very long to find out. I think I was in the lake as fast as a bolt. We always had an exciting time with him and his brother.

Which reminds me of when his brother (also named D, who was/is as nuts as he was/is) decided that Mr. B (my bother) and he should parachute off of his roof. The only problem is that they didn't have any parachutes. No problem says little D, we can just use garbage bags as parachutes. B is looking down from the roof of the house with a garbage sack stretched between each hand as little D jumps first. He lands in the emergency room with something broken. B decides to go the way of the ladder. I could tell you about the time after little D learned about gravity that he learned about gasoline inside his garage, but that is still a hot subject.

The moral of this story is to help start a Revolution and run with the younger brother of the son-in-law of your states congressman. I started going to Dog Days again this summer after around 15 years off. I had to reintroduce myself to Red Dog. I was able to go 6-8 times over the course of around 2 months and I was becoming chiseled like the rock I knew I could be. Jda would quote a line from Naploen Dynamite in which the goofy uncle says, "Back in '82 I could throw a pigskin a quarter mile!" (Now what about the layer on top of the rock).

dwhitey & his work out regiment

Well, blown to poo, as they stopped dog days for a few weeks, and I haven't been back since. One of the motivations to go to Dog Days was also a small pond just a stones throw away from the stadium where we work out. I just happened to have my fishing rod with me and snagged onto a decent bass (around 2+ lbs) one day after working out. Shanart felt as though I was cheating doing both, since I was leaving her with the chittlins for longer, but I was back by 7:15 (most nights). I did however start running this week again. I huffed and puffed like the wolf at the three pigs. I took Mr. C out one day in his stroller and boy that hurt. Once I get past the first few days, it seems to be quite a bit easier. It is sad to say from working out 4-6 hours a day, to having it be a rare occasion. I miss my chiseled look, I want it back. I guess I will eat less steak tonight on my date to Longhorns with Shanart.

<img border='0' style='border:1px solid #000000; Brian took photo's and I shot this roughly 3 year old Gobbler with a 11 3/8" Beard and 1 1/8" Spurs. We were in a tent in the middle of the field. We had a hen decoy set up around 25 yards to the SW of us, when a real hen came to hang out by our decoy and help our chances. Once I saw this bird out of the corner of my eye, I had around 30 seconds to set up. He would not stop to listen to any noise I made because he was so intent on the hen. I shot him in full strut at around 35 yards. What a bird! Brian did a drawing of this photo, which turned out really well.
